When you think about health, the environment may not be the first thing that comes to mind. But the health of our Nashville residents is directly intertwined with the health of our urban tree canopy. That’s why NashvilleHealth partners with Root Nashville.
The Root Nashville campaign is a citywide initiative to plant 500,000 trees in Davidson County by 2050. As new development flourishes, Nashville continues losing trees. This campaign is a concentrated effort to restore urban tree canopy.
We need trees in order to be healthy because they provide cleaner air and water, stronger waterways, cooler local temperatures, and much more. Root Nashville’s vision is to build a tree canopy for Nashville that creates more equitable, healthy, climate-resilient neighborhoods.
The impacts of climate change have had a devastating impact on communities and the frequency of catastrophic events is increasing. Efforts like the Root Nashville campaign help to engage people in climate mitigation efforts and show that nature is not separate from people. You can help the Root Nashville campaign hit its goal by spreading the word that large, free trees are available. Share the planting site application with churches and nonprofits, become a Neighborhood Planting Captain for your own community, log newly planted trees on TreePlotter, and volunteer with tree-planting organizations during planting season in the fall and winter. Our city will be healthier, cooler, and more beautiful when Root Nashville’s goal of 500,000 trees planted is reached.
NashvilleHealth creates a culture of health and wellbeing by serving as a convener to open dialogue, align resources and build smart strategic partnerships to create a bold plan for health and wellbeing in Nashville.
