Reflecting on Black History Month
This Black History Month our CEO Mark Yancy and Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center CEO Katina Beard are reflecting on the past struggles and achievements of the Civil Rights Movement and the many lessons learned through this deep history to address our current challenges. That includes the dramatic health disparities and lack of health equity that pervade our Nashville community. Read their Tennessean article on why Black Nashvillians deserve a push for equity. Let’s Put Health Equity at the Forefront All month long we’re focusing on addressing the alarming health disparities that continue to exist in our community and the work that needs to be done to eliminate health disparities and advance health equity. NashvilleHealth’s Community and Wellbeing Survey found nearly 50% of African American adults in Nashville had been diagnosed with high blood pressure, in comparison to 27% of white adults surveyed. All month we will be sharing Minority Health’s mission to advance health equity for Black and African American communities. |
We are honored to have Shubhada Jagasia, Marshall Crawford, C.J. Stimson, andDavid Dill join our team and are eager to use their experience and commitment to enhance the health of all Nashvillians.
In October we raised nearly $170,000 to tackle health disparities at the Nashville Bourbon Auction thanks to an incredible host committee of Daniel Weisman, Mark Lombardi, Max Goldberg, Robert Sherrill, Sam Reed, Drew Holcomb, Ryan Moses, & Paul Steele.
The show of support from members of our community was amazing and continues to propel us toward a Nashville that leads in community wellness and #healthequity.
NashvilleHealth is proud to partner with the American Heart Association, Nashville and spotlight how they’re prioritizing health issues to close the gap in Nashville’s Health Disparities. |
“Here in Middle TN, we have prioritized three health issues that could close the gap in health disparities. They are:blood pressure, nutrition security, and tobacco use/ vaping.” – Annie Thornhill, the Executive Director of American Heart Association, Nashville |
