Joining Forces to Combat the ‘Silent Killer’
North Nashville is a disparity hotspot for high blood pressure (hypertension), also known as ‘the silent killer.’
While preventable with diet and exercise, many people don’t realize they have hypertension until it leads to deadly chronic illnesses such as heart disease and stroke.
That’s why we are joining forces with community partners, to work to provide every Middle Tennessean the fair and just opportunity to be healthy.
April 4th was a pivotal point in our pilot project progress as nonprofits, community partners, health organizations, and academic partners came together to promote #healthequity, starting with uncontrolled hypertension in North Nashville.
That’s the question we’re answering all month long as we compare Nashville’s health data with that of similar-sized American cities. Nashville was ranked the WORST for average life expectancy, infant mortality rates, smoking rates, and poor mental health. As the nation’s healthcare capital, we have to do better and set the standard for prioritizing our health. |
We are excited to announce our continued partnership with Metro Nashville Public Schools for Wellness Week! Wellness Week is our opportunity to teach Metro Nashville students about healthy lifestyles, and how they can establish and maintain healthy habits all year long. Nearly 1,000 participants have already pledged to participate, the highest number ever. |
This month we are joining the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) in observing National Minority Health Month.
This month, let’s empower the health literacy of our communities by channeling this year’s theme, Better Health Through Better Understanding, which focuses on how meeting cultural and linguistic needs can improve health outcomes.
