COVID-19 and Heart Health

More than a respiratory infection, COVID-19 is affecting many of the body’s organs and systems. Early data suggests people with coronary heart disease or high blood pressure are more likely to develop severe symptoms, and stroke survivors and those with heart disease, including high blood pressure and congenital heart defects, may face an increased risk for complications if they become infected with the COVID-19 virus.

According to the Nashville Community Health + Well-being Survey more than 30 percent of Nashvillians have been diagnosed with high blood pressure. Learn more about heart health in Nashville neighborhoods using the survey’s interactive tool.

To address the city’s high rate of hypertension, NashvilleHealth is partnered with the American Heart Association and the American Medical Association to administer Target:BP, a city-wide collaborative working to to reduce the number of citizens in Middle Tennessee who have uncontrolled high blood pressure. Currently in its third year, 19 clinics and hospitals are participating representing a reach of nearly one million patients. Tracking COVID in Tennessee

Each day, the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) releases figures tracking the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in each county and statewide. In an effort to raise awareness about these figures and understand how infection rates are changing, NashvilleHealth shares tracking updates and insights based on TDH data.

Data acquired from theTDH Website, as of May 7 analyzed by Sajid Khan, Change Healthcare and NashvilleHealth Board.
