NATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS + LOCAL ACTION
The value of partnership cannot be understated.

From national initiatives with large-scale goals to locally-focused action, NashvilleHealth partners are pursuing measurable ambitions to keep Nashville healthy.  In each of our three core focus areas, as well as our desire to best incorporate data into all of our action, we are excited to see how these partnerships impact the health of our city.

Million Hearts: 1 Million Fewer Heart Attacks & Strokes by 2022 – Co-led by CDC and CMS, the Million Hearts initiative recently named NashvilleHealth an official partner in its effort to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes nationwide by 2022 through both clinical and community-based interventions.  Together with the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, we were honored to host Janet Wright, executive director of Million Hearts, at a recent summit on chronic disease prevention, which plays such a critical factor in heart health.

Nashville Infant Vitality Collaborative – Funded by CityMatCH and co-led by the Metro Public Health Department and Meharry Medical College in partnership with NashvilleHealth, NIVC brought together stakeholders from across the city to take action on reducing pre-term birth, helping moms-to-be make safe sleep possible, and other critical factors in the health of our babies.  Every year, three kindergarten classes full of Nashville babies don’t make it to their first birthday.  Thanks to all who joined us and who are moving our city forward in keeping our smallest citizens healthy.  Our next meeting will be on June 13 at 9:00 a.m.and we also continue to hold workgroup meetings around four primary strategies: housing, pre-term birth, pre-conception health, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).  Let us know if you would like more information.

Tennessee State University & The Truth Initiative – Thanks to Tennessee State University and The Truth Initiative for their work together to promote tobacco-free policies on historically black colleges & universities (HBCUs) statewide.  This conference took place a week before a bill was passed allowing Tennessee’s public educational institutions to go smoke free. The next Tennessee Tobacco-Free Coalition Meeting is June 5th.  If you would like more information, let us know.

Let’s Talk Data: Featuring 500 Cities – Nearly 100 people attended a data talk hosted by Metro Public Health Department with NashvilleHealth.  The data from 500 Cities, an initiative of the CDC, CDC Foundation, and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, gives census track level health estimates on 27 chronic disease indicators and health behaviors that many will use to take action and better dedicate resources.

PARTNER NEWS AND EVENTS

In April, the Safety Net Consortium launched My HealthCare Home, a web application connecting the uninsured and underinsured with more than 50 not-for-profit, community-based clinics in and around Nashville. Care available includes basic to specialized, from dental to mental health.  This launch exemplifies the power of partnership, representing dozens of community-based providers, academic medical centers, non-profit organizations, health care systems, and Metro Public Health Department.

We just celebrated National Police Week. The stress and emotions of the job often lead to heart disease, says Nashville’s Deputy Chief Todd Henry who serves on NashvilleHealth’s Steering Committee. But our city’s leadership and Metro Public Health Department is making sure that the police force has the resources they need to keep hearts healthy – from hypertension control to quitting smoking.

The Healthy Nashville Summit – Nurturing Healthy Brains for a Thriving Community was a huge success.  The event particularly focused on ACEs – or Adverse Childhood Events – and their impact on child health.  Expert workshops, as well as panels featuring students who had each overcome personal struggles, gave more than 350 participants the chance to engage in discussions on how to help our students thrive and be resilient in the face of challenge.  Thanks to hostsMetro Department of Public Health, Healthy Nashville Leadership Council and ACE Nashville.

HOW ONE COMMENT = NEW PARTNERS

“44% of all cigarettes smoked are done so by people suffering from mental illness.”
This quote shared during a NashvilleHealth Steering Committee meeting sparked a connection between two of Nashville’s leaders for a smoke-free state around shared initiatives.  They are now collaborating on future endeavors.  Thanks to Tom Starling, CEO of Mental Health America of Middle Tennessee, and Denise Costanza, director of Government Relations in Tennessee for the American Heart Association, for your commitment to partnership and collaboration.
